In order to install a Xclamation or package you must already have the
archive file <common.tar.gz> as well as the installation script <install.sh>.
To install XMayday, you just need the <install.sh> script.

<common.tar.gz> contains the files and resources common to Xclamation and
XQuad:

- Basic fonts
- Fonts metrics
- Directory nls/    for X11R5
- Directory locale/ for X11R6
- The file XKeysymDB

Then, download at least one of the following packages, according to your
environment.

  II. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
==============================================================================
==============================================================================

Place the files <install.sh>, <common.tar.gz> and the above packages in the
same directory and enter the command:

$ sh install.sh

or

$ chmod +rx install.sh
$ ./install.sh

After consenting to be bound by the LICENSE agreement, the list of all
files in the current directory with extension '.tar.gz' will be
displayed. Select the packages you want to install:

Example:
Please select packages to be installed (ex: 1 2)
  1. XMayday-v111.i386-sco-3.2v4.2.tar.gz
  2. XMayday-v111.i486-linux-1.2.tar.gz
  3. XMayday-v111.rs6000-ppc-aix-4.1.4.tar.gz
  4. XMayday-v111.sparc-solaris-2.5.tar.gz
  5. XQuad-v130.i386-sco-3.2v4.2.tar.gz
  6. XQuad-v130.i486-linux-1.2.tar.gz
  7. XQuad-v130.rs6000-ppc-aix-4.1.4.tar.gz
  8. XQuad-v130.sparc-solaris-2.5.tar.gz
  9. Xclamation-v130.i386-sco-3.2v4.2.tar.gz
 10. Xclamation-v130.i486-linux-1.2.tar.gz
 11. Xclamation-v130.rs6000-ppc-aix-4.1.4.tar.gz
 12. Xclamation-v130.sparc-solaris-2.5.tar.gz
 13. common.tar.gz
Your choice:

Select the packages you want, by entering the corresponding numbers with a
"space" between each.

Exemple: 2 4 6 8 9

Note:
* The order in which you select package numbers, doesn't matter.
* If you have not already installed <common.tar.gz>, do not forget to include
  it in your selection, otherwise Xclamation and XQuad will not run.
  XMayday doesn't required <common.tar.gz>'s installation.
* If a package has already been installed and configured successfully, you do
  not need to install again <common.tar.gz>.

Where do you want to install the software?
(DEFAULT: /usr/Axene)
Your location:

 The path you define here is referred to as <INSTALL_DIR> in the rest of this
document.

Note:
  If you work on an heterogeneous network, you are advised to install XQuad
  or Xclamation programs for each environment within the same directory.

The script will try to find `gunzip' and `tar' in your file system. If it
failed in this search, it will prompt you the location of these files.

Once the archive files have been decompressed, you are invited to select the
language for the user interface:

Choose language
  1. English.us (DEFAULT)
  2. English.uk
  3. French
Your choice:

Then the script will configure and create shell scripts to make running
Xclamation, XQuad or XMayday from everywhere in the file system. It will
propose you to create a symlink of these shell script into /usr/local/bin
(only if you have right to write into this directory).

Then this message is displayed, the installation is finished and successful.

==============================================================================
  III. FILES AND DIRECTORIES INSTALLED
==============================================================================
==============================================================================

You will find the following tree in your install directory:

XMayday* (if you install almost one XMayday package)
XQuad* (if you install almost one XQuad package)
Xcl* (if you install almost one Xclamation package)
app-defaults/
bin/
lib/

XMayday is the script for running XMayday
XQuad is the script for running XQuad
Xcl is the script for running Xclamation

The directory <INSTALL_DIR>/app-defaults contains the links to the resource
files to be used, which are located in <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/locale/ , and are
named XQuad.*, Xclamation.* or XMayday.*

The directory <INSTALL_DIR>/lib includes the following directories and files:
X11/
fonts/
locale/
metrics/
xcalibur.prc
xclamationrc@
xmaydayrc@
xquadrc@

The directory <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/X11 contains the file XKeysymDB as well as
the directories nls/ and locale/, which will be used if the application cannot
find the ones in your environment.

The directory <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/fonts contains the PostScript fonts used by the
Xclamation & XQuad: *.pfa *.pfb (PostScript fonts) *.pfc (internal fonts).

The directory <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/metrics contains the files *.afm,
(font metrics).

The file <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/xcalibur.prc contains the procset needed for
PostScript printing (needless for XMayday). It is common to all AXENE
applications.

The link <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/xclamationrc hooks to the right configuration file
to be used, according to the user language selected.
Idem for <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/xquadrc and <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/xmaydayrc.

The directory <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/locale contains the following files used by
the applications:
<XQuad.*>, <Xclamation.*> or <XMayday.*> : resource files for the different
languages.

<xquadrc.*>, <xclamationrc.*> or <xmaydayrc.*> : configuration files for the
different languages (described below).

<languages> : used to list the different languages that can be selected.

<xquad.hosts>, <xcl.hosts> or <xmayday.hosts>: these files are automatically
created when the scripts loading the applications are executed; they hold
the host name and the name of the corresponding executable. If you grant
the right to modify this file, the scripts will no longer ask you which
executable to run if a number of them are installed on an heterogeneous
network.

==============================================================================
==============================================================================
  IV. SOME SPECIFIC CONFIGURATIONS
==============================================================================
==============================================================================

<INSTALL_DIR>/lib/xclamationrc, <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/xquadrc and
<INSTALL_DIR>/lib/xmaydayrc are configuration files for the applications.
They hold the different sections you may customize. Refer to the documentation
for details.

In particular, the PRINTER section allows you to install new printers,
by adding the following line:
\PRINTER{\NAME{printer name}\COMMAND{printing command}}
Example:
\PRINTER{\NAME{LaserWriter}\COMMAND{lpr -h -Plw}}

You also can declare your printers in the files
<~/.xclamationrc> or <~/.xquadrc>.
These files must begin with the command:

\CONFIG{

     followed by your personal definitions, such as:

\PRINTER{\NAME{ printer name}\COMMAND{printing command}}

     and end with a closing brace:

}

\PRINTER is the only section important for the configuration of your system;
the other ones have default values that allow the applications to operate
properly.
Note: the "lpr" command adresses a default printer

==============================================================================
  V. RUNNING THE APPLICATIONS
==============================================================================
==============================================================================

To run Xclamation, enter the command <Xcl>
To run XQuad, enter the command <XQuad>
To run XMayday, enter the command <XMayday>

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Notes:
* You may enter as parameters the names of one or more document files to be
  loaded. ex:
    $ Xcl example.xc
  try
    $ Xcl -help
  to see the command line options.

* If only one version of XQuad, Xclamation or XMayday is installed, the
  script will run it automatically.

* If more than one version of an application is installed (for example, on a
  heterogeneous network) the first time you start the program, the script
  will ask you which is to be run. It will then write your answer in the file
  <INSTALL_DIR>/lib/locale/*.hosts to avoid having to ask this question again.

* If you do not want this selection to be made automatically, remove write
  rights for this file.

* If you do not want to use the scripts, you will have to create the following
  environment variables:

  $AXENE_LIB = <INSTALL_DIR>/lib
    You can use $XCLAMATION_LIB, &XQUAD_LIB or $XMAYDAY_LIB to set a
    different path per software.
  $XAPPLRESDIR = <INSTALL_DIR>/app-defaults
                 (or the directory where you have stored the resources)
