This is a README file for Pd, a free real-time computer music software package
resembling Max. You can get Pd for IRIX, PCs (preferably running NT), or
Linux. Some installation instructions follow for the three platforms:

IRIX. Connect to crca-ftp.ucsd.edu as "anonymous," cd to pub/msp, and get
pd-0.xx.tar.Z. You can unpack this into any directory you please; the
executable is pd/bin/pd, which can be invoked from a UNIX shell. The executable
looks at its command line to figure out where it is, so put an alias to pd's
absolute pathname in your .cshrc.

PC. Pd is compiled under NT, but might possibly work under windows 95 and
even windows 3.1 as well. Connect to crca-ftp.ucsd.edu as "anonymous," cd to
pub/msp, and get pd-0.xx.zip. Unzip this, creating a directory such as \pd.
(You can put it wherever you like but the path should have no spaces in it;
e.g., "Program Files" would be a bad place.) Add ...\pd\bin to your path and
type "pd" to a "command prompt" window to run it.

LINUX. Get Pd from Guenter Geiger: http://iem.mhsg.ac.at/~geiger. The PC
version has been running for some time; there is now also an Alpha version.

Whatever your platform, you'll want to pick up GEM too. Developed by Mark
Danks, GEM adds 3D graphics and video capabilities to Pd. For IRIX and NT,
hit http://cybermed.ucsd.edu/mdanks/; Gem for Linux is available at Guenter's
site.

A similar, commercial software package for MacIntosh, called MSP, is available
from David Zicarelli. Compared to Pd, you'll find MSP much more user-friendly.
MSP (which runs on top of Opcode Max) can be obtained either from Zicarelli
(http://www.cycling74.com/) or from IRCAM
(http://www.ircam.fr/produits-real/msp-e.html), which also provides user
support. Also check out IRCAM's FTS, which is available on various platforms.

If you have qustions about Pd, or if you wish to be notified of future
releases, write msp@ucsd.edu (Miller Puckette, Music Department, UCSD),
or get on Guenter's list (see http://iem.mhsg.ac.at/~geiger).
